Fifth Visit Cashel Folk Village

27th Apr 2015

by Dónal Ryan

On the 17 April 2015 5th class went to the Cashel Folk Village. We met Bernard who is Ross’s uncle. He showed us a load of stuff. He showed us the original St.Patrick’s Cross, which was knocked over by a truck in Cashel.

Bernard showed us bog butter which Irish people buried in bogs when the English soldiers attacked. It’s really just preserved butter. They buried it in the nearest bog so they would remember where their home was.

Bernard showed us an old horse, rabbit and man traps. He showed us the old Irish police uniform which was used during the Easter Rising and War of Independence.

Bernard brought us outside to show us an old Gypsy or Tinker caravan. They were called Tinkers because they could make anything from tin.

He showed us a chapel used by Catholics during the Penal Laws. The Penal Laws were when English Protestants enforced unfair laws on Irish Catholics.

Bernard showed us models of the 1916 rebels. He showed us guns used by Padraig Pearse and other rebels. He showed us an old poster from the English guards looking for Daniel Breen, a 1916 rebel. They were offering 1,000 pounds for his capture.

Bernard showed us a room with models of people from the famine. It showed us what life was like during  the Famine. It showed us how hard the Famine life was. He showed us an old wishing well. It was deep and Bernard said people used to get water from it and people used use that well.

I really liked our trip to the folk village.
