Cashel Overcome Strong Ballyporeen Challenge

St John the Baptist BNS, Cashel 3-4  Ballyporeen 0-4

by Ricky Lambe, Rang 6

On 5th October 2012, the U13 Cashel Gaelic football team walked up to Leahy Park to play against Ballyporeen in their second championship match of the season.

Cashel would have to win this match to go any further in the competition.  The referee threw in the ball and the game began.  Ballyporeen had a very strong team, but Cashel got the first score – a point from Jake McCarthy.  Minutes later, Ballyporeen were awarded a free and easily scored to make it a draw; but two points by Dean Quinlan got Cashel back in the lead.  At half time it was Cashel 0-3, Ballyporeen 0-1.

A few substitutions were made at half time.  When the second half began, Ballyporeen were on the attack and had a few shots on goal, but these were saved by Dean O’Brien.  Ballyporeen scored a point to make the gap just one point between the teams, but two goals from Aaron Moloney and a point from Tomás Skeffington settled the Cashel side.

Cashel gave away too many frees and Ballyporeen converted them easily.  Ballyporeen had a chance at goal, but a heroic block by Jak Hays stopped it from going in.  A late goal from Jake McCarthy sealed the deal as Cashel won 3-4 to 0-5.

The starting thirteen for Cashel were as follows:  Dean O’Brien, Luke White, Ricky Lambe, Tomás Burke, Dylan Byrnes, Kevin Gayson Molloy, Jak Hays, Evan Hynes, Dawid Wojcik, Dean Quinlan, Jake McCarthy, Eoghan Murphy and Tomás Skeffington.
